WWE King of the Ring 2000 legacy

Kurt Angle, on capturing the 2000 King of the Ring crown:

It was quite an honor. I knew that I would eventually do it. I expected to do it when I did, which was my first year in the business. Guys like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Triple H, Edge—these kind of guys that continue to prove themselves—that is just a great accomplishment to win the King of the Ring. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin did it and hurt his neck, had to get neck surgery, and came back. To win King of the Ring, that’s the kind of individual you have to be. You have to be a determined, dedicated individual that’s not just talent but considered one of the best in WWE. Any guy that wins the King of the Ring takes the next step to what I call the elite level, which is the main event level. I knew I would win it my first year because I knew I deserved to be there. My regret is that I didn’t win back-to-back King of the Ring honors. I ended up in the finals the second year where I got screwed by Shane McMahon or else I would have been the first ever, which I deserved to be.
