Once the World Tag Team Championship became exclusive to Raw, SmackDown general manager Stephanie McMahon decided to hold a tournament to crown new WWE Tag Team Champions that would be exclusive to SmackDown. Rivals Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit formed an unlikely pairing at McMahon’s request and went all the way. Angle & Benoit defeated Billy Kidman & John Cena and Los Guerreros before overcoming Edge and Rey Mysterio in the finals of the tournament at No Mercy 2002.
