Back to World Heavyweight Championship
Chris Benoit waited 18 years for his first World Heavyweight Championship, so it was only fitting that it came at WrestleMania XX. Just to earn the shot, he had to outlast 29 other men in the Royal Rumble, and even after that, Shawn Michaels tried to steal his shot at the contract signing. Instead of stealing his shot, though, Raw general manager Eric Bischoff ordered that Benoit and Michaels would both get a shot against Triple H in a Triple Threat match in the main event at WrestleMania.
Benoit was able to stave off both men as he made Triple H tap out to the crossface. Confetti fell from the ceiling and Benoit celebrated with one of his best friends and WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero, as well as his family and a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd. Benoit would go on to defend his title in a Triple Threat rematch and he never let Triple H get the better of him as he headed into SummerSlam 2004 to face Randy Orton, where he eventually lost the World Heavyweight Championship.
