Following a stiff mule kick to the head from Goldberg at Starrcade the month prior, Bret Hart was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and was forced to retire from sports-entertainment. Hart relinquished the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and a title tournament culminated with Chris Benoit defeating Sid Vicious on January 16, 2000. Less than 24 hours after earning the gold, Benoit came to Nitro and officially quit WCW, relinquishing its title.
