Inactive since it was unified with the Intercontinental Championship by Edge at Survivor Series 2001, the United States Championship was revived by SmackDown general manager Stephanie McMahon in 2003. The executive set up a tournament for the vacant title, which was won by Eddie Guerrero at the Vengeance premium live event on July 27, 2003.
