Back to WWE United States Championship
Edge challenged Kurt Angle for the U.S. title on an edition of Raw. Angle looked to have things going his way, as he had the ankle lock firmly in place. Just as Edge was about to tap out, a blast of fire exploded and Kane’s music blared through the arena. Angle let go of the hold looking for the Big Red Monster. Edge snuck up behind Angle and rolled him up for the win and the U.S. title. Edge would go on to defeat Test six days later to unify the U.S. title and Intercontinental Championship. The United States Championship was then declared inactive until July 27, 2003 when SmackDown general manager Stephanie McMahon brought it back exclusively to SmackDown.
