Wahoo McDaniel was forced to vacate the United States Championship in September 1981 after being injured by an Abdullah the Butcher assault. A tournament was then held to fill the vacancy. In the finals of the tournament, Sgt. Slaughter defeated Ricky Steamboat. The victory gave Slaughter his first of two United States Championship reigns.
