After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Chris Jericho on the May 4, 2000, episode of SmackDown, Chris Benoit used Mr. McMahon’s hatred for Y2J to score a rematch on the May 8 episode of Raw. Benoit had a huge advantage heading into the match, as Y2J was forced to defend the title against Kurt Angle and Big Show on the same night, prior to his match against Benoit! Then, during the Benoit–Jericho match, the Wolverine locked Y2J in the crossface, and although it was unclear whether Jericho had actually tapped out, Mr. McMahon called for the bell, making Jericho the new Intercontinental Champion!
