Since Triple H had to vacate the Intercontinental Championship due to a knee injury, a tournament was held to determine the new champion. Ken Shamrock went through Steve Blackman and Val Venis to set up a match against X-Pac in the finals. Shamrock came out on top for his first taste of WWE gold.
