Hot Rod began the match brawling and The Mountie tried to counter it with traditional wrestling holds. After an Irish whip sent The Mountie into his manager Jimmy Hart, Piper was able to slap on the sleeper hold and put his adversary to sleep. The crowd erupted as Piper won his first, and only title in WWE.
